Decent reader for getting your feet wet in the field of academic analytic philosophy. The text is easy to read however when dealing with continental or eastern philosophers the author/editor has made some interesting translation choices. The book would be good if the audience was primarily from a monotheistic or moral realist perspective looking to learn more about philosophy as a historical developmental function of society as it is quite tautological.

Fantastic Book. I first came across this awesome piece of literature in a philosophy class in college. Unfortunately, at the time I needed the money so I sold it. Now I have it back in my library and can't wait to re-read it!

Meticulous...but also Dense and Disjoint

I really wanted to love this book. First, I must congratulate the scholar on her exemplary research. The strength of this book is indeed its meticulousness. I applaud her attention to not just the details to be found in the texts she studies, but also attention to the previous scholarship as pertains to the topic. This aspect of the book is worth a full five stars. What hurts the book is its density and disjointness. Perhaps a few more charts would have helped, as she frames the whole of the book on a horizontal and vertical map she repeatedly refers to, but we never get to actually see applied. Just in general I was asked to fill in a lot of gaps and the book seemed to jump from one place to the next. I would get a splash of detail followed by a declaration of the problematic lack of evidence. This only served to heighten the disjointness. In the end, the author offers commentary on the New Testament in light of the research. Again, great details. But where is the context into which I would place these details? I am writing this review not to complain, but to ask for something. With so much of value in this book, I think it would be helpful if perhaps some supplemental materials were added. I think the author must be energized and onto something with her references to the horizontal/vertical map. Perhaps if the author has a university web page she could publish some supplemental maps that show how the details she discovered in her research and how they can be applied to, and understood within, her framework structure. The point is important, something shifted, I hear that. Please. Show me.

A seminal work of meticulous scholarship

Blood sacrifice is a fundamental aspect of most antiquarian religious belief systems including what would become the Judeo-Christian religions of the western world. Christianity would view the crucifixion of Jesus as the ultimate blood sacrifice and replace animal sacrifice with the sacraments of wine and bread taking the symbolic place of flesh and blood. But how was animal sacrifice carried out and how did it evolve in the context of the Greco-Roman period within which Christianity was to emerge? "Animal Sacrifice In Ancient Greek Religion, Judaism, And Christianity, 100 BC to AD 200" by Maria-Zoe Petropoulou (a teacher on the International Baccalaureate program of the Hellenic American Foundation, Athens) specifically addresses animal sacrifice, sources and methodology in ancient Greece, the character of Jewish sacrificial ritual worship and how it differed from the Greeks, and relationship of the early Christians (a widely persecuted minority within the Roman empire) to animal sacrifice up to AD 200. Of special note is Professor Petropoulou's epilogue 'A Suggestion Concerning the Reasons for the Cessation of Animal Sacrifice'. I appreciate the detailed research, but this book is really a mess. The lines of argumentation are not clear. The detail is there, but there is need of a much more refined synthesis.

Nina Garcia: Yes, editing down to one hundred was a tremendous challenge. I also made a point of keeping in mind all the different personalities and fashion moods inherent in a stylish woman. The list is based on classic items that have been around for many years and will continue to be relevant for many years to come. Knowing something about these items are key to a woman’s closet.

Amazon.com: What would you say to the many women who feel that shopping for clothes is a bit overwhelming, considering how many places there are to shop and, perhaps even more difficult, budgets to maintain. How does a woman begin to build the dream wardrobe you've laid out in your book?

Garcia: A good way to begin the process is by being self aware of just what your own style truly is. Turning inward and identifying what one really likes and dislikes, exploring one’s inner fashion voice, and ultimately feeling inspired and building on your self esteem are base blocks for cultivating personal style; all topics I touched upon in my first book, The Little Black Book of Style.

Garcia: The point is to shop for high value in items that will endure for many years, items that will never lose their relevance. Try not to focus on price and name brands. A truly stylish woman makes smart decision based on good taste, and the ability for an item to endure.

Classic advice

The subhead reads "A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own." This book delivers. Author Garcia makes it clear that this list is HER list, and that every woman will have a somewhat different collection of apparel essentials. But this is a good place to start.

The list is in alphabetical order (see below). Each listing has a description and full-color illustration of the item. Many have a sidebar called Fashion 101, which is a short history of the product, often with quotes. Garcia also includes Fun Facts, her own personal favorite brands, and many fashion tips.

Especially fun are "Great Moments" segments. Great Moments in men's white shirts include Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday, Elizabeth Taylor in Giant, Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman and Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction.

The best thing about this book is how it elevates timeless quality over of-the-moment fads. My 14-year-old daughter looked at The One Hundred and then said she wants to save up and buy maybe one piece every other month or so, so she'll have a good collection when she gets out of high school. If a book can pass along that kind of advice to teens, I'm all for it!

happy shopping!

If you're looking for a book to guide you as you select some timeless, classic pieces for your wardrobe, this is it. Minimalism is quite fashionable and trendy these days but I think Nina Garcia was onto this years ago when this book was released. Instead of buying trendy pieces that go out of style very fast, invest in quality items that will last you a long time and never go out of style. Plus no hoarding clothes that you won't wear and just cause a mess in your closet. happy shopping!

For if you want to reflect on what's been added to the list of staples in the past decade but not as a current guide.

This is a good read if you want to fantasize about big ticket fashion or if you want to take a look back at Garcia's lofty point of view as of 2009. Yes, it is dated, but maybe only in matters relating to tech, vis a vis phones and music listening devices. Who could foresee the comeback of visible headphones? Garcia is not guilty of being shortsighted, she just wrote of what she felt at the time. Anyway, that is only a small part of the list. The 100 items include things that any magazine devotee will have seen cited over and over again so there's no new information here but it's fun. Definitely isn't a guide of what to gather together, more like a summation of all the standards of "uptown" and aspirational fashion prevalent in the 00's. Yeah, actually the non-tech items might seem dated too. Could be fun to read and ponder how fashion has changed in the past decade. Might conjure comparisons with the whole Sex and the City sphere and how that might look if it were made now. The overall edicts about fashion classics still pretty much hold up, I think, so buy if you just like collecting comprehensive viewpoints on what to wear but not as a definitive guide. Oh! Occurred to me... the position on pajamas is kind of quaint now. Sweatpants are firmly here and can be as chic as anything!

excellent for newly dedicated Christians

As a newly dedicated Christian, it's hard for me to judge a lot about this Bible yet, other than the introductory information and the beginning of Genesis. But I'm learning so much, and I feel that this was a great choice for me. I love the way the Bible is laid out, the seriousness with which the subject is treated, and how there's so much information appropriately (for me) interspersed throughout the pages of the Bible for newcomers.
