Informative and Easy to Find Info

If your on a deadline and need info quickly or just don't have the time to search volume after volume for the info that gives your work the extra flavor of authenticity then this book is a must! Sure the info is available in other western reference books but you would literally have to search hundreds of volumes to locate all the facts and info included in this single book. So why make it so hard on yourself? This one book will put the info at your fingertips!

Title a bit misleading

I use this book sometimes and I like it, but I have just a few problems with it. I got this book because it was titled "Everyday Life in..." and that's what I expected to find. A 'snapshot' of everyday life. Despite its title, at least 1/3 of the book is more about the westward expansion and American Indian culture in general, which is available in greater detail from numerous other books and web sites. For an overview of western history and culture, this book is fine. But for "everyday life," a far superior book on the same topic is "Seeking Pleasure in the Old West" by David Dary.

Fascinating and valuable

While this is designed as a one-stop resource for novelists and historians dealing with the American West, it is much more. It provides a vivid portrait of the frontier and those who settled the country. It is beautifully organized, supplies the telling detail, and belongs on the reference shelves of all libraries, and in the libraries of all collectors of Old West materials, and in all history collections dealing with early Americana.
The author has a genius for gathering valuable material and presenting it in orderly fashion.

Find out how you are resisting happiness

I have read many books by Matthew Kelly and this may be his best yet. He makes a strong case that many of us are actually resisting happiness. At the end of every chapter he gives us the key point to consider and action step to help us in our quest to find true happiness. As i go back over the book, I am trying to make many of Matthew's suggestions part of my daily life.

SLAY THE RESISTANCE DRAGON!!

This book is awesome! It smacks you in the face with some truth. If you are tired of not being happy and will actually put the effort into being happy, it will do wonders. So many things, that may seem obvious to some, can keep you from true peace and happiness. Thank you Matthew Kelly, I hope I can implement this in my life for a long time, but that resistance can really get you down. Just gotta slay the dragon!!

An incredible read!

The subtitle of this book is "A True Story about Why We Sabotage Ourselves, Feel Overwhelmed, Set Aside Our Dreams, and Lack the Courage to Simply Be Ourselves... and How to Start Choosing Happiness Again" and that is quite a mouthful. But having read a number of Matthew Kelly's books over the last few years I was very excited to read this one. I must admit I read this book while rereading Rediscover Jesus, I read it through once and could not put it down, and am now reading it through a chapter a day. It was very interesting reading these two books in parallel. Matthew Kelly states in the introduction that this book is the most personal book that he has written to date. Having read a number of the others I completely agree. He has opened up and been transparent about his own faith journey, his successes, growth and failures. He is teaching by example, his example. And what a brave, courageous and motivating example it is.

Matthew also shares a number of stories that he has shared before. But this is the most exhaustive collection of them, and some of them go into more details or extended versions of the stories. So this book is part autobiography, part spiritual history and part a guidebook for those of us who wish to grow in the Christian life. Matthew states in the introduction: "The hardest war to win is one you don't even realize you are fighting, and the hardest enemy to defeat is the one you don't even know exists. Every day you are at war with resistance." And he goes on from there to show us this pattern from his own life. And like many of Kelly's other writings the focus is not on him but on God, and our relationship with God, "When I did something that I knew was God's will, something that would clearly help me become a-better-version-of-myself, I was filled with joy. When I did something that I knew was wrong or was clearly not good for me, that joy began to evaporate." And is that not what Jesus promised in Matthew 5:6 'For the thief comes to steal, kill and destroy, but I have come that you might have life and have it abundantly.' How many of us would say we are truly living the abundant life? That we are living from a place of Joy? Kelly also declares "It is clear that God does not want us to be negative thinkers. But he also doesn't want our thinking to be neutral. He wants us to be positive thinkers on an epic scale." Would you say you are living that way? If not this book might open your eyes and your heart to following the Holy Spirit more.

In speaking specifically about parenting and working with children Kelly says "I suppose we all need a chance to get outside ourselves and serve other people. It seems the earlier in life we get this chance in a real and tangible way- a chance to serve others, know that we have worth, discover our innate ability to make a difference in other people's lives- the better off we are." And I think about my own children and How I want them to learn to live to become the best version of themselves. We regularly read Kelly's Why Am I Here as a family, and my children often talk about decisions that help them or hinder them from being that best version of themselves. But by growing in it from the learning in this book, hopefully and prayerfully I can be a better example.

One of the key takeaways I got from read this book was about self discipline, even self discipline in the little things. Matthew says "These realizations about denying ourselves, self-control, delayed gratification, and fasting are not new. They are wrapped up in two thousand years of Catholic genius. Saint Augustine wrote, "Conquer yourself and the world lies at your feet."" And learning from his examples we can start small and build to bigger disciplines. But on that same note Kelly says if we are striving to grow in discipline we will also experience greater resistance "Resistance hates discipline. It hates self-control. Resistance abhors delayed gratification and any type of self-denial that makes your heart, mind, and soul strong." He also advises us that if we want to see change we need to be part of making that change happen. "If you want to be part of an excellent parish, stop waiting for someone else to make it one. Get involved and make it an excellent parish. Resistance encourages us to take it easy and settle for mediocrity. But God created us for happiness, and he fills us with great joy as we strive for excellence, especially in the spiritual life." Matthew insists:
"God wants you to live an excellent life. In that quest for excellence you will find a rare happiness."

He also stresses the importance of being gentle with ourselves as part of the processs. "One of the most important reasons to be gentle with ourselves is because if we cannot forgive ourselves, we will struggle to forgive others. And if we cannot forgive ourselves or others, we will resist even God's forgiveness. When we are gentle with ourselves, when we are patient with ourselves, we develop awareness, and awareness breeds compassion. And every person who ever crosses your path needs a little compassion." And also
"Be gentle with yourself, be gentle with others, and never stop striving to be all that God created you to be: the-very-best-version-of-yourself."

And again he always cycles back to being who God calls us to be. He says "God designed human beings for specific purposes. When we stray from them, things tend to go wrong and we start to feel dissatisfied at best and miserable at worst. You were made for mission. You will never have lasting happiness until you realize this and act on it.".

This book was an excellent read, and I know already that I will read it again soon. Matthew draws examples from his own life and a few examples from outside his life. Each chapter has a main teaching followed by a reminder of the Key Point and Action Step at the end of the chapter. This is a great read and it will inspire you.

On a side note I am still waiting in anticipation for The Narrow Path that Dynamic Catholic promoted for almost a year but keeps getting pushed back but books like this one and Rediscover Jesus. But both Rediscover Jesus and this book are excellent reads, that will have immediate impact on all areas of your life if you read them with an open hear. So give this book a read or a listen all you have to lose is your resistance. And you have a world of joy and happiness to gain, true joy found only in God.

Robert F. Hull Jr. is the recently retired Dean and Professor of New Testament at Emmanuel School of Religion in Johnson City, Tennessee. He has written on New Testament textual criticism, Christian identity in the Greco-Roman world, and biblical theology.

Put off by the complexity of text critical squables, but need/want to understand NT text criticism, this is the best book

For anyone put off by text criticism, or just overwhelmed by its complexity and seemingly endless exceptions and counter arguments, but wanting or needing to understand text critical issues, in my opinion this is the best book that is descriptive, not argumentative, by design. Hull is apologetic for this in his Preface, but I think that he need not be. We need more books like this, that explain the key developments and issues in biblical studies without advancing the authors particular slant on issues. Indeed, it refreshing not to know whether he is a defender of biblical inerrancy, or whether he believes that Paul wrote all the letters attributed to him - its just not on his agenda as it has been for some other authors.

I have several books on New Testament textual criticism, but I must concede that I have been slow to read some of them as they just make the issue seem so complex with very little in the end to show for all the effort expended to understand what in the world they are going on about. But this is not the case with Hull's book. It is very pleasantly concise, with some but not exhaustive examples of the ideas which he discusses. Moreover, he has engaged New Testament textual criticism in comparison to classical textual criticism, so as to bring some of the fruits of classical studies into contact with New Testament studies which I greatly appreciate, even if I do not completely agree with him on the major differences (I would note that scansion of the metre of classical texts is a major tool of classical textual criticism that is not shared with New Testament textual criticism since the New Testament can not be metrically analyzed in the same manner that e.g. Homer's or Virgil's epics can be).

Hull's point of writing is to turn people on to the merits and benefits of textual criticism of the New Testament. Considering the easy reading manner in which he has written his book - short to the point chapters-, I think that he just might succeed. However, I should mention that this book would probably require a couple of readings for someone completely new to the field of New Testament textual studies. In other words, though Hull's book is not too technical, it has not been dumbed down, so yes there is some Greek and Latin etc. in the text (but always translated). Hull's book is just a really good overview of the topic in my opinion with all the qualities expected in such a book: thorough bibliography, indices, and judicious footnotes.

Excellent summary of the discipline of NT Textual Criticism

This wonderful monograph tells two stories simultaneously: the story of the New Testament text and its transmission from the earliest extant copies up to the latest scholarly Greek editions, and the story of the development of the discipline of New Testament textual criticism from early figures such as Origin and Jerome, to the emergence of the modern critics like Erasmus and Westcott and Hort, to the latest shapers of the discipline like Bart Ehrman, Kim Haines-Eitzen, and David Parker. The development of the discipline is indeed the primary emphasis, as author Robert Hull (recently retired Dean and Professor of New Testament, Emmanuel School of Religion) focuses attention on movers (significant figures in the discipline), materials (important sources and documents), motives (the goals of various movers), methods (criteria by which certain movers made decisions), and models (examples of methods in practice).

Although the primary audience is seminary, divinity, and grad students of New Testament, this book would also be useful in undergraduate bible courses or even for the lay reader, provided that the reader has enough New Testament background to understand the general idea of textual criticism. Although Hull provides some preliminary material explaining the reasons that textual criticism is necessary and the general goals of the discipline, this is certainly not an introductory level book. I would think the most natural place for this book would be in a seminary or graduate level course on textual criticism, alongside readings from Westcott and Hort, Metzger, Epp, Ehrman, Haines-Eitzen, and Parker. Unfortunately, as Hull laments, such courses are difficult to find. I certainly was unable to take one over the course of my graduate career (all of the authors mentioned above I read independently), and found that interest is quite low even at the Ph.D level.

A good starting point

This book is a good starting point for someone desiring to learn SEM in Lisrel. Theoretical/statistical concepts have been explained in a simple manner and explanation of Lisrel is thorough. Useful as a course book. Not a good book if you already know SEM and are looking for in-depth understanding.

The book has some appeal.

About 20 years ago, I carried out a number of projects involving analysis of SEM models with LISREL7. The syntax of this language does not differ much from that of LISREL8. In this regard, I did not benefit much from the book by B.Byrne. However, I do not regret having bought it.

The style of the book is prolix. Virtually all the topics discussed in the book are included in the LISREL8 and PRELIS2 users' guides by K.Joreskog and D.Sorbom. The presentation of material is much more compact in the manuals than in the book. In my opinion, this more concise presentation is better and a reader can assimilate easier relevant information.

I believe that the approach adopted by the author can appeal to many readers. A positive feature is an extensive list of references related to various disciplines, including: business, education, marketing, medicine and sociology. The SIMPLIS command language is described much more extensively in the book than in the manuals.

I am a doctoral student currently enrolled in an SEM class and I found this book to be invaluable. Our class exclusively used LISREL software and this book provided clear explanations of the syntax and output files. Byrne's writing is clear and understandable, plus the chapters are full of worked examples. I highly recommend this book to anyone learning about SEM or learning to write LISREL syntax.

Don't spend your money twice, if you already own 'The Secure Home'. (which is the book I recommend you purchase).

This book has a few more ideas on sheltering in-place, but I would recommend you purchase the author's other book, "The Secure Home". It is 674 pages, 8 1/2" X 11" and very highly recommended by myself. I have read the Secure Home several times and keep referring back to it. It also has a section on sheltering in-place, plus much-much more. Also, If you should ever move to that special other place, you will have the information to construct you own Root Cellar (underground shelter) to prepare for that storm just over the horizon.

Gun, reloading, storm, and storage room tips.

Great book. It was written for people who want to build a shelter to protect them from some of the evil that may surround them. I bought it because I was looking for ideas for a gun and reloading room. I figured that if this book has ideas for keeping bullets from getting in it would have good ideas for them not getting out, in case the unthinkable happens. He has a great idea for wall material to preform this task without costing a arm and leg.

The book has more information then what I really needed but because of this book I am now planning for a larger room then first considered because I plan on using it as a storm shelter and keeping more valuables protected from fire or theft. This book is written for building a shelter area in a structure that is already built. The writer has another book if you are planning to build a whole house on this concept but it is much more expensive. This one is good enough for me.
