Recommended affordable version for online class

Got this older edition than the requested one for the Medical Terminology online class of the University of New England. The professor will give you the words via lecture, while you can write them all out, an actual view-able book is far more useful to me personally. Sometimes I read books or not, but I'm glad I bought this book for the course as it made things so much easier. Can't beat the overall price and the word list is pretty identical to the course. It is a little disease terms heavy in the reading sections, so a previous course done in human anatomy and physiology would go a long long way in soaking this material up.

Woohoo! I love medical terminology! It is hard, but interesting. You learn a lot about language. However, this is not a book I would read leisurely. This is definitely a class textbook to follow lecture in class.

Off to a Good Start!

This story was a little hard for me to get into at first, namely because I found the opening pages to be over-written and the descriptions of our main characters to feel a little stereotypical for a romance novel. I guess that's okay for most romance stories, but I always hope for a little more distinctiveness. I did like the doctor/malpractice lawyer pairing, however.

By the Lunch with the Parents scene, however, things were picking up. The lunch was very funny, and Nina and Wade both started feeling more three dimensional. I was getting into it pretty good by Chapter Five and was rather engrossed come Chapter Six. It was suspenseful enough to keep me interested and moving right along.

My main issue over all was with Nina. Anyone who reads my reviews knows that I tend to have trouble with female characters, generally in romances/romantic story lines, so that's my thing...but there it is.

What my problem was, was that early on we see her presented as being very analytical, even in (especially in) romance. I realize it's part of the story that Wade makes her feel impassioned and reckless, but it's when we're looking at her in the moments away from Wade that the inconsistency shows.

I'm trying to explain this without putting spoilers in my review, lol.

There comes a point in the story where she makes a snap emotional judgment about Wade, and at that point in the story, you can understand it. Her reaction later and that of Sally (her best friend) kind of annoy me for other reasons, but my inconsistency issue is that she clings to this belief despite any and all evidence to the contrary. She even will believe something an untrustworthy character says because it enforces that first belief, when there's no real evidence.

A truly analytical, intellectual mind will always consider the evidence and will entertain the possibility that things are not as they emotionally believe they are. Nina never does until the very end, when it smacks her in the face. During those knee-jerk emotional moments, it's understandable. But even when she's out of the situation and has time to reflect, she never considers the alternative possible. It clashes, to me, with how she is presented and how she is allegedly supposed to be like.

As a very analytical person, I know how it works and I suppose that's why it bothered me as much as it did. It felt...contrived for the sake of suspense, drawing it out unrealistically if Nina was really supposed to be the way she was described. Contrivance always tweaks me. Now, someone else may disagree. May say that she is just that emotional about Wade that it blinds her analysis. But I didn't quite see it that way.

Otherwise, my issues were fairly minor. It could have used some more editing, but was never so bad off to make it hard to read. Detective Sullivan felt more like a caricature than a character, but he was a minor player. There was some Tell on scenes where it should have been Show. And Point of View changes without distinction.

Even so, all that being said, I enjoyed the story. Despite the inconsistency, I did like Nina and I liked her strength and dedication to her profession, even if it was a little naive at times. I liked Wade, but I'm always into a good alpha male that's not an alpha jerk. The sex scenes were hot. I thought the malpractice plot was interesting, and although some aspects of the climax were not a surprise, others were. The ending chapter was fun, if a little silly.

So, I think I gotta go with a pretty solid 4 on this one.

Awesome quick read that holds your interest!

Written with knowledge of the medical profession, this love/lust story grabs your attention with its "who done it tale". The heroine in the book is an intelligent woman who finds herself entangled in more than she bargained for. I like to compare the book to a 50 shades meets Sydney Sheldon.

Either way, it's guaranteed to hold your attention and even provide a chuckle here and there.

My Review:
What a fun, first read for me, by a relatively new author. Our heroine, Nina, is an emergency room doctor. She's smart and classy, has rather eccentric parents, and is completely dedicated to her career. Wade, our hero, is a lawyer and he is sweet and charming with a dash of brooding sensuality. Wade happens upon Nina while being treated for a shoulder injury and they both experience an instant attraction. Nina runs into Wade again while dining with her parents and Nina agrees to a date. A little dinner, some conversation and they tumble into bed. Things aren't so cut and dried, though, in their budding relationship. A big misunderstanding that is the result of a case Mitch is investigating with his law firm and Nina puts the brakes on the relationship. However, circumstances throw this couple back together and they learn to navigate the treacherous slope of lust, love, treachery, lies, and misconceptions. I don't want to give away spoilers but the ending blew my mind because I did not see it coming. This was a fun and enjoyable read with a very good, suspenseful storyline, some surprise twists and turns, and a wickedly hot romance that rounds out the book perfectly. Both characters are strong and well liked and I absolutely adored Nina's parents (and their genius party planning). I give this book 4.5 of 5 stars and look forward to reading more of Ms. Eugene's work in the future.

We love to hear our daughter playing Adele 21 on piano ...

Our daughter is 10, and has had 1 year of piano lessons.

I walked in the house yesterday, and heard a very recognizable "Rolling In The Deep" coming from the piano.

She loves this book. When they say "Easy Piano", they mean it. This isn't "chopsticks" - it's a lot more musically complicated than that, but is appropriate for early-stage piano players with some training.

She's no Mozart. She likes to play, and has a knack for it, but that's all.

She recommends this book highly because it lets her feel good about playing something on the piano that is contemporary and recognizable as the same music as we listen to on the radio ...

NOT the original sheet music!!!

Just got my music today, opened up excitedly to play and sing my favorite singer, and THE MELODY LINE IS IN THE ACCOMPANIMENT!!!!! I'm so upset. I had ordered "Someone Like You" online individually and it was perfect, so I ordered the entire book when it became available in the US assuming it'd be the same thing. No. It isn't. It may have the "look inside" option, but I ordered it from my phone and that option isn't available. I hope the return process isn't arduous, because I want the real deal, not some dumbed down version. I don't even understand why these versions exist. If someone wanted to play the melody line with the left hand, all they have to do is look up one line to the vocal line. I mean seriously, why am I paying for something that has a repeated line for 90% of the entire thing?!? Ugh.

One star because it's a pretty good price for sheet music, two stars because Adele never deserves a one star rating.

Historian of Science Hankins did great!

Hankins was my sr. thesis advisor at UW in the early 80s (pre-publication of this book). The scope of his learning is astonishing and his handling of the 18th c philosophes, technology and religion was great. I highly recommend this book.

About the Author

After an early career as a professor of computer science, Steven Muchnick applied his knowledge of compilers as a vital member of the teams that developed two computer architectures, PA-RISC at Hewlett-Packard and SPARC at Sun Microsystems. A Very Good Starting Point Into Compiler Theory from 1997

My employer owns the book. It is a constant on my shelf. The dragon book is great but there are concepts I did not understand in the classic dragon book until the Muchnick book spelt it out for me.
Also at the end of the book it covers real products and how they implement optimization techniques.

recommended with reservations

I bought this book to help with a compiler I'm writing for personal use. I've had introductory compiler courses, and I was looking for a text to expand my knowledge. I read this book from front to back and learned a lot. However, there were a lot of areas that didn't make sense on first reading. I figured they would become clearer after a re-read. They didn't. Each time I reach a point in my compiler development where I need additional explanation, I return to this book and find that what didn't make sense on a first read doesn't make much more sense the second time around. Or the third.

The problem with this book is that some parts are nearly indecipherable without prior knowledge. They are missing bits of detail that an advanced compiler designer might just "know", but without these details the rest is gibberish for the advanced beginner. For example, the section on iterated dominance frontiers didn't make sense after three readings. I finally pulled up the original paper on the subject, and all was clear. Muchnick had skipped a step in the algorithm.

Another example of missing detail is in the chapter on code generation. Muchnik uses the "=>" symbol without explaining its meaning. Without this detail, much of the section is meaningless. I pulled up a bunch of papers on the subject to try to find what I missed, and now it's clear.

Yet another example - Muchnick uses three kinds of intermediate language/representation (IR) - high-, medium-, and low-level IR. It's pretty obvious what's different between high- and medium-level IR, but his explanation of the difference between medium- and low-level IR is sorely lacking. More examples would have been helpful.

He uses his own programming language for describing the algorithms. This didn't bother me much after I understood the language. But his example code is a confusing mix of verbose and terse. His terse variable and function names make it difficult to grasp what the code is doing without already understanding the algorithm.

The good thing about this book is that it covers a lot of ground. It introduces most of the topics an advanced compiler designer needs to know. But to really grasp all the ideas in this book, you need access to a good computer science library. The bibliography is very good; you can learn a lot from reading the references. I signed up for the ACM Digital Library for just this purpose. If you're a student, you can get access to the ACM Digital Library for less than the price of this book - that's a real bargain.

My recommendation is to buy this book, and be prepared to do additional research to overcome its shortcomings.

Great Trivia for those who are really Obsessed with TV!

I actually bought this book at Barnes and Nobles..... I really enjoyed this book! This book is definitely for those who are truly obsessed with TV! I thought that I was really good at trivia, but when I tried the questions in this book, I was not as "TV obsessed" as I thought! The book covers a wide range of "channels" or topics from the heyday of TV, comedy, drama, talk shows and even reality shows. There are 2,500 multiple-choice questions in all and has an electronic computer that can generate random questions or you can type in the question number and answer the questions that way. The computer will keep track the questions you get right or wrong. It will give you the correct answer if you get it wrong and will also provide a percentage of how many questions you answer correctly. The game can be played alone or with another player. The computer will keep score. The batteries are replaceable, so players can get maximum use of the product. This book is great for trivia buffs, TV mavens and generally anyone that like casual games. This book will have you wanting to play more, especially if you let the computer randomize the questions. If I ever have to go the field or deployment, this would be a great companion!
One problem I see: When I was playing the game, I had it set to random questions. There are 2,500 questions in all. I ended up getting the SAME question number come up 3 times while playing! I got the question right when it came up the first time! I mean, 2,500 questions! You shouldn't be seeing the same question twice or three times like I did!
All in all, this book is fun and educational! I would highly recommend!

I saw the book at my sisters how tried it out and LOVED it!!! I like to think I know a lot about TV but this book is proving how much I don't know about TV shows. If you love TV shows this is the book for you.

The last word in Nonsense - a timeless classic for children

The Complete Book of Nonsense by Lear is a broad compilation of Limericks, Poems, Ballads and other forms which celebrates the fantasy world of the child. Lear creates simple visions of exaggeration with a man's beard so large as to have birds nesting in it, or some one who's legs were so long as to leap from Turkey to France in one prance. Included also are a number of love stories or stories of devotion such as the exquisite "The Owl and the Pussycat" who went to sea in a beautiful pea green boat.
It is a book which does not make any attempt to cram a moral into a child's mind or teach facts. It makes it's appeal directly to the child's curiosity and fantasy world, illustrated with a unique and charmingly naive yet sophisticated pen and ink drawing style, it delivers enchantment and will fascinate. He speaks their language.

Fantastic Book for the Young and the Young at Heart

This is an absolutely enjoyable book, it is so innocent and charismatic it will take you back to your childhood, it combines excellent rhyme with very creative and dear characters and plots, the original illustrations are also adorable, everyone with a young heart should own this book.

This is the second copy I purchased. The first copy I read to my grandson when he was little. Now at almost 17, he remembered this book and wanted to borrow mine. I then got him his own copy.
