About the Author
Janny de Moor is a freelance culinary writer and photographer working from 't Harde, in the Netherlands, who has written over 20 cookery books. In 2004 she won the prestigious Wina Born Award for the best culinary publication in the Netherlands. Suzanne Vandyck was born in Belgium and later moved to California, where she established Worldchefs International LLC (www.worldchefs.net). Suzanne published an international recipe book on clay cooking, Cooking for Healthy Living with Vita Clay, and has received numerous awards, including Outstanding Culinary Instructor Recognition in 2006 for ACE (Cupertino Adult and Community Education), Sunnyvale, California.

Tasty recipes for food that's sort-of not-quite familiar

I came across this cookbook while I was looking for something else on the shelves of my nearby public library. I'm familiar with most European cuisines, as I'm sure you are, but if someone offered me ten bucks for every traditional Dutch or Belgian dish, I couldn't afford the bus fare home. Hmm, mussels and frites? Beer? Chocolate? Endive? I've had a few excellent Belgian restaurant meals, though, and flipping through the cookbook in the library made me say Yum a few times. This came home with me -- and I am happy it did. Now it's in my Amazon shopping cart.

Because I'm not the only one who's ignorant of Dutch and Belgian history, its eating habits, or the evolution of its cooking (remember Dutch West Indies from school? Where do you think all those spices ended up?) I appreciated the very-readable history and overview with which the book begins.

Most of the cookbook, of course, is given over to the 150 recipes, accompanied by lots of photos. Not just the finished dish; in most cases there are also "how to make this" pictures; the book promises 750 photos, and none of them are gratuitous. If you treated this as just an "Oooh pretty" food porn book, you'd be very satisfied.

But there's no reason to stop with the pictures because the recipes are very appealing. The cookbook is organized in a familiar way: soups; appetizers; snacks and street food; fish and shellfish; poultry and game; meat; salads and side dishes; desserts and drinks; baking and breads. I'm tempted to say that it's "like" northern French or German cooking, though of course it's its own cuisine... Still, I see plenty of similarities with German food (which I love), such as the use of mustard and asparagus, and with country French food. In other words, while there are plenty of regional specialties here, you'll find most of the ingredients familiar -- and, for the most part, find-able in your local well-stocked grocery store. (Getting rabbit, pheasant, and venison is always ridiculously expensive here in the U.S. though. I'm likely to substitute chicken whenever I get around to making the "rabbit in cherry beer" recipe that's been calling to me.)

So far, I made the Flemish-style Beef Stew with Beer, which is a lot like other beef stews -- onion, beef, garlic -- but with Chimay beer (how could THAT be bad?) and, uniquely, finished off with two slices of rustic bread spread with a few tablespoons of mustard. It was a hit. I keep getting geared up to make one of the three mussel dishes listed, as soon as I can find a reliable purveyor of mussels. Let's see, shall it be the mussel soup, or steamed mussels with celery, or "mussel meal" with fennel, celery, onion, Pernod, and chervil? I also have my eye on a veal-and-prune stew with lemon; trout with almonds (which looks a lot like French recipes for the same thing); and endive, ham and cheese gratin (Hmm, I wonder what Belgian endive tastes like *cooked*?)

Without doubt, there's plenty to keep me occupied and well fed. I think you'll like this cookbook, too.

Stunningly Beautiful!

This stunningly beautiful cookbook was previously published as two separate titles: DUTCH COOKING and THE FOOD AND COOKING OF BELGIUM.
The first 45 pages contain chapters on the culinary history and culture of both regions, followed by an introduction to typical foods and beverages. Next are 200 pages of lavishly illustrated recipes (3-7 full-color photographs per recipe), a list of suppliers, and a recipe index.
The recipes are grouped as follows:

Soups (22 pages)
Appetizers (16 pages)
Snacks and Street Food (22 pages)
Fish and Shellfish Dishes (16 pages)
Poultry and Game Dishes (24 pages)
Meat Dishes (28 pages)
Salads and Side Dishes (18 pages)
Desserts and Drinks (28 pages)
Baking and Breads (30 pages)

Each recipe starts with a short paragraph placing it into its cultural context, followed by a list of ingredients. Measurements are given three different ways: metric, US standard, and volume (cups, tsp. etc), and substitutions are suggested where appropriate. Instructions are clear, and broken down into numbered steps. Each recipe fills exactly one page, thus eliminating the need to turn the page while cooking.
Having grown up in Belgium, I was thrilled to find all my favorite recipes here, such as Watercress Soup; Li�ge Waffles; Ghent-Style Chicken Stew (Waterzooi); Endive, Ham and Cheese Gratin; Flemish-Style Beef Stew with Beer; Chocolate Mousse; Dame Blanche; Tarte au Maton or Mattentaart.

This book answers the growing American interst in Belgian and Dutch cuisine. Both countries' traditions get a fair share of attention, and the recipes are do-able. This is always a problem when some ingredients may be difficult to obtain.

Very useful book for homeopath.

I've bought this book to help my homeopath to make a translation into Russian for his own everyday use. He thinks this book has may be one of the most brief, convenient and complete description of remedies. Could be applied not only to women treatement but to children and men as well - the section "Concomitants" vividly represent general simptoms typical for every remedy. As a patient now I've got much deeper understanding of what is called simptoms and should be reported to the doctor.

Great Book, very well done!

The Trans Am Firebird restoration book is probably one of the best on the market if you’re going to be restoring a 1970 � to 1981 Trans Am or Firebird. You will find this to be one of the most useful books in your technical library. It’s written by Melvin Benzaquen and is really well done. The chapters are laid out well. They start with models and numbers and how to decode them, which is always fun. Then it gets right into what kind of restoration do you really want to do? This, of course, depends how much work you want to do and what kind of results you want when you’re all done. Are we building a daily driver with a weekend show and shine, or a full-on period correct, final show quality car? I like that way that the author progresses into the basic disassembly of the car followed by the bodywork and body panels and then the rest of the car. Once we get it all apart next up is going to be cleaning, examination and repair work. All of this is covered in great detail with plenty of photos. Body prep and painting is gone over in detail. There are separate chapters for engine rebuilding, transmission rebuilding, drivetrain etc. Then it’s into brakes and suspension. This is detail oriented and is a complete hands-on section. Even if you have never done one of these before, it is totally possible with this book. Also there is an electrical section on trouble shooting. Electrical seems to be the weak part for most of us, so I was especially glad to see that. I don’t think he missed anything. I like the fact that it is all there in great detail with plenty of photos. When I get into a project like this I like to have two copies of these books. I spiral-bound one and put it on the bench so it’s always available and the other one goes in my tech library. Oh, one more item that is worth mentioning, no self-respecting Trans Am would be complete without the Eagle on the hood!

Great Guide if You're Restoring Your First Trans Am

I am currently restoring a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am, and I purchased this book in hope of gaining further insight on my restoration (which is progressing at a turtles pace). While there is a lot of good information in this restoration guide, it's geared more for the novice. If you've already completed a restoration or two, you're not going to learn anything new by buying this book. If, however, you're working on partially or fully restoring your first Trans Am, then I would recommend you add this book to your shop library.

Must read before you buy that Trans Am or Firebird Restoration Project

The 1970s Pontiac Trans Am & Firebird is an American Muscle Classic. Melvin Benzaquen's Trans Am & Firebird Restoration 1970 1/2 - 1981 is a great book for anyone thinking about restoring one of these classic muscle cars. The book is more geared/focused on readers who are new to restoring cars. This point is emphasized by the many times in the book when the author explained the various levels of restoration (driving, Concours, show) and the pro's/cons of doing the various parts of restoration yourself or sending it out to be done. Being realistic, Benzaquen also discusses costs. Nothing is ever free and often you get the quality you pay for. The book follows an excellent/logical flow starting with Models and Numbers and then progressing through the car from the outside in. The book is well written and loaded with photographs. The how-to instructions are straight forward and numbered making them easy to follow. Bottomline: The target reader for this book is not the professional automobile restorer--the focus is the reader who is new to restoring a Trans Am or Firebird. If you're thinking about going out and finding that restoration project, you need to buy and read this book before you go buy the car. It will be money well spent.

Mona Lisa LaPierre's (10) academic parents are off to Russia for research (18), leaving Mona behind in a cabin deep in the woods of New England with her crotchety Mohegan Indian (8) grandfather whom she barely knows (19). There is no electricity (45), her grandfather seems able to communicate with bears (51), and the lines between this world and the world of spirits are blurry to say the least. Mona passes the time wailing the blues on her trusty guitar Rosalita (14). As she bonds with her grandfather, she also begins to connect more deeply with the natural world and with both sides of her Native American heritage, Mohegan and Abenaki (8). This would be more than enough to process, both for Mona and for readers, but this summer after high school is also filled with a cold case murder mystery, budding romance, love triangles, dysfunctional parents, family secrets, death, and supernatural occurrences. Though ambitious and inclusive of voices underrepresented in teen literature, this novel regrettably fails to strike the right chord. Rather than weaving together in a cohesive story, the various plot points and surprise turns are heaped upon one another at an inconsistent pace, and the result feels cluttered and forced. Too many ideas and not enough focus unfortunately diminish what could have been a unique and much needed novel exploring the lives of contemporary Native American teens. And she might just be falling for Del.~~~Danger lurks in the woods and in unlikely places that would normally be considered safe. Mona has angered people by uncovering�long buried secrets. The deeper she digs the more help she needs from Grumps and her extended Native American family.~~~Zobel created one of the most memorable characters I’ve read about in a long time. Mona develops from a snarky teen to a mature young woman over the course of this novel but she still has rough edges. She learns about herself while digging into her family’s history and culture.~~~This Young Adult Mystery was so much more than a “whodunit”. The mystery of the murder developed along with the characters, making Zobel’s novel fast paced and interesting. I loved the rich history and tradition that I learned along with Mona. This is the first book in a trilogy, and I can’t wait to read the next two books. (Writeknit)

Zobel created one of the most memorable characters I've read about in a long time. Mona develops from a snarky teen to a mature young woman over the course of this novel - but she still has rough edges. She learns about herself while digging into her family’s history and culture.
This Young Adult Mystery was so much more than a “whodunit”. The mystery of the murder developed along with the characters, making Zobel’s novel fast paced and interesting. I loved the rich history and tradition that I learned along with Mona. This is the first book in a trilogy, and I can’t wait to read the next two books.

Good Reading

Wabanaki Blues is an entertaining introduction to what I think will be an interesting series. It’s part coming of age and discovering who you are and where you’ve come from sort of book, and part mystery.

The story is told in the first person through the main character Mona Lisa LaPierre, who is also known as the girl who never smiles. At the beginning of the story it’s easy to see why. She seems somewhat of a tortured soul whose parents leave her with her grandfather for the summer. What starts off as a negative thing for Mona, it does in fact become a turning point for her. It’s through her adventure there that she grows as a person, and the author did a wonderful job allowing us to be part of Mona’s journey.

I really enjoyed learning about all the Native American traditions that the author weaved into the story. The dialogue is natural sounding and entertaining. One of my favorite characters in this story was Grumps, Mona’s grandfather. He too seemed to change and evolve over the span of this story.

The pacing is fast and you find yourself turning the pages to find out what happens next. The mystery is draws you more as the story progresses.

Overall, it’s a fine debut and I think young adults who are looking for something besides the usual dystopia novels, would find this a good pick.

Love the idea, misses a little in delivery

When Mona's parents announce they'll be heading to Russia to study bears, Mona is shocked to learn she'll be spending the time with her granfather in remote New England woods. She is forced to miss graduation and the chance to get her crush, Beetle, to notice her before they part.

Mona, the child of both Mohegan and Abenaki tribes, has a passion for blues. This passion and the voice of her grandmother Bilki keep her grounded as she goes on a journey to learn the truth about a young woman's disappearance and in reality, about herself.

Zobel, being Native American herself, really paid tribute to her heritage. Instead of watering down Native traditions and stories, they took forefront in this novel. Zobel shares her traditions and writes them with such reverence and respect.

I REALLY wanted to like this book. Unfortunately, too many story lines and crossing details made it hard to keep the different parts of the story straight. It's a genuine coming of age story told in an uncoventional way, which I appreciate. It just became very complex in a way that wasn't able to keep me engaged. Complex in the name of suspense is fantastic. This just fell short of that for me.

Required reading

This book is a must-have and a must-read for the person interested in the growth and progression of the Black community. There are some eye opening information relayed by Mr. Camara that may be too big of a pill to be swallowed by many. This is not a book for those that do not wish to experience any cognitive dissonance. If you fear having your beliefs challenged, then look elsewhere.

Bruce Vandervort is Professor of Modern European and African History at the Virginia Military Institute, USA. He is editor of The Journal of Military History and author of Wars of Imperial Conquest in Africa, 1830-1914 (1998).

Canadians will be smug

The comparison is a great idea for a book, carried out fairly well. The focus is mostly the 1810-1890 and in the US, almost entirely the West. This is a bit misleading because the Indian wars in the East ran from the early 1600s through the early 1800s, and included quite high casualties on both sides, as in the disaster Indians inflicted on St Clair's army in the 1790s. This is an issue because for all their epic quality, the wars in the West were smaller in scale and cost fewer soldier's lives.

Such events in Canada are described as smaller in scale and much less violent--again the time frame alters perceptions, because French Canada used Indian allies in warring with the British colonies, and the scope of those wars included chunks of Canada. The book is a narrative of campaigns and contexts, and has fewer of the character sketches and subplots that are typical in current history writing.

By far the bloodiest were in Mexico. The Caste War in the Yucatan (1848-1900) may have consumed 200,000 lives, and the era of Comanche raids deep into Mexico reduced large areas to something like chaos.

I found the accounts of the US-Apache wars to be the most interesting. Overall the book is a good read, the prose fairly good. Maps are adequate. If you are Canadian, you may be a bit smug. Still, comparing violence and history this way is I think a very useful endeavor for historians.
