A book you can actually cook with

A really well-researched book with recipes I will actually make. THE HOBBIT is a favorite of mine and I'm always worried when people try to make a buck off of a trend or something well-loved. The author clearly knows her stuff. It's not just food with Bilbo's name slapped on it. This is a historically-accurate book, with food you can still easily cook, that connects the food and appreciation for food in THE HOBBIT to Tolkien's own experiences growing up on rations. It's an amazing concept. The photos are stunning. The food is very comfort-driven. She also offers alternatives for gluten-free folks, vegans, and others with food preferences. Love it!

Delicious, Different and a Delight.

What a delight! We've made 15 of the recipes so far and have absolutely loved them. I especially like the suggestions for using the left overs - very economical and sensible. I'm an old fashioned cook (I use recipes that date back four generations in my family) and love the wholesome, country style goodness of these recipes.

As someone else mentioned, I did notice a type-o and wish that the editing had been more careful. In the "Strawberries and Cream Bread" the ingredients call for 1/2 cup heavy cream, but the text mentions 1 cup heavy cream. I believe the 1/2 cup measurement is correct. At least that's what I used this morning and the bread turned out moist, light and delicious.

Some of the ingredients are a bit unusual (at least these days), but my local chain grocery store has had everything. The meat department just had to order the rabbit and oxtail for me, but everything else has been in stock.

One doesn't have to be a Hobbit fan to appreciate these recipes. This is down-home country cooking at its best.

I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Tolkien

Usually when I get a cookbook I just skim through the recipes, but when An Unexpected Cookbook came in the mail I sat down and read through every recipe step by step. Not only am I excited to make some delicious Hobbit inspired meals from these recipes, but I also learned a whole lot about Victorian-era food and cooking, and what types of things Tolkien would have eaten throughout his life. There's a lot of personality and humor mixed in throughout the steps of the recipes, which makes them more entertaining to read than any cookbook I've encountered before. The suggestions for how to reuse leftovers in other recipes is also a plus. This is a really cute and engrossing cookbook! I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Tolkien!

Historically interesting, but repetitive and a bit too promotional

The Start-up Nation was recommended to me by a friend who said it was an insightful book. It wasn't a disappointing book, but neither did it leave me very impressed. The book attempts to answer one single question: "Why is the amount of start-ups in Israel relatively so high". It does a decent job in explaining that and summarizing Israels history, but it doesn't leave you with much concrete advise.

The book consists of four parts, but unlike most books, the parts aren't actual clear groupings as the authors just flows from story to story and the authors repeat the same points many times. The stories were nice and the book was well written. It would be hard to distill the answer to the start-up nation questions as many things related. However, from the beginning on, there is a very strong emphasis on the army. The emphasis on the effect of mandatory army service was actually something I disliked about the book. A good example of this was the story of the army having an elite group which receives an thorough scientific training (Talpoit). This elite group created an exceptional amount of entrepreneurs. Only the 1-2% top students will be allowed to join this group. One thing that I kept wondering is if it is the 1-2% of the stop students who are exceptional entrepreneurs or people from this army unit? It felt the conclusion was drawn too quickly.

Other strong influences that caused the start-up nation are the Jewish culture and especially its lack of hierarchy and it's emphasis on challenging and discussion. Also the people in Israel have a shared mission to build a country and that strong relationship with the country creates some passion for helping the country which also aligns people. The book considers the huge amount of immigration to be another advantage as it created a wide diversity and people who immigrated are natural entrepreneurs.

The book covers quite a lot of history (especially military) of Israel, which I did find interesting but I wasn't always sure how relevant it was. It also made interesting sidetracks my comparing Israel with Dubai and Singapore and shows how the country is different and how that causes different different levels of initiative.

All in all, I felt the book was interesting yet not very special. I would recommend it for people who are interested in Israel, but not for people who want to know about start-ups. It gives very little concrete advise about start-ups or how to create a start-up environment. 3 stars.

A comprenhensive and illustrative book

Israel, has always fascinated me. I went there on a holiday trip last year (2011) and started to see many developments and solutions they have created in different fields: solar energy, irrigation, IT development, agriculture and so on. So when I came across this book, I knew I had to have it in order to understand, how a young country (60 years) have surpassed older countries that posses vast natural resources and that there are not in a constant fight for survivor.

This book is very easy to read. The authors portraits Israel from its beginnings and what they have done to be where they are right now with examples and without getting into much technical and economical terms.

They have a long road ahead, but what they understand and its intrinsic in his culture is to keep innovation and coming up with solutions. Failure is not seen as something bad, but instead a learning experience that is encouraged.

Excellent book. Applies both to the businesses and to the individual...

Very anti-semitic and nonsensical

I personally found it very racist against God's chosen people. An anti-semitic slur was found hidden in the text, like a puzzle. There was also an antiseptic caricature pictured in the book.

I did find it humorous how he proposed energy independence through the waste to energy incineration of circumsized foreskins.

Something I didn't understand is how America could replicate the subsidy it gives to Israel. The books says that the U.S. can write a check to itself but that doesn't make sense to me.

In the words of the Prophet Fore Chan: Only a fool would take anything posted here as fact. Treat this review that way/

I wanted to return the book but my waifu already threw away the box it came in and I didn't want to spend money on a new box just to send it back. I now use it to prop up a broken table leg. It's doing its job but I would have rather save my time and money by not buying this.

The winners of the NBA playoffs for the 1988-89 season were the Detroit Pistons, long a poor-to-mediocre team, but one that had come close to triumph in 1987-88. The story of how the Pistons became champions is told here by the author of The Sweeps , who concentrates on general manager Jack McCloskey but also pays close attention to the other officials, coaches and players involved. The victorious team was put together over a period of years, with the final player added during one of the most unpopular trades in Piston history, when Adrian Dantley was sent away. Stauth attributes McCloskey's success to choosing players with a passion to compete, and to his ability to assemble a squad with the proper balance of youth and experience. He traces the building of the winning team: the draft choices, signing of free agents, and timely trades, all adding up to the proper team chemistry, the vital key to any championship. The man behind the franchise is no-nonsense general manager Jack McCloskey. Stauth's narrative is the exceptional story of the Pistons and their rise to NBA success. He pulls no punches; much of his book reflects the attitudes of players and management as well as the media. Although many will question Stauth's condemnation of certain practices in professional basketball, this is one of the best books ever on professional sports. Recommended for most libraries.

This is a book of building incredible idea of creating the winning team - the idea which unified the fantastic players : Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer, Joe Dumars et cet, GM J.McCloskey and Coach C.Daly. Tha fascinate story about team chemistry, tensiot, motivation, power and LOVE to the basketball. True strory of REAL BASKETBALL WORLD. very well told story. THE Book For Armchair Basketball General Managers

Cameron Stauth actually followed the Detroit Pistons around for two championship years, and it appears he didn't even get in their way!
Instead of focusing on the drama of any one game, The Franchise follows the Pistons through their ups and downs over more than one season. From the draft rounds to the heartbreaking playoff losses, this book shows that running an NBA team is about much more than dribbling and shooting.

This book is excellent for anyone with even moderate knowledge of the game of basketball. It includes several colorfully written characters, such as a (somewhat milder) Dennis Rodman, years before he became a Chicago Bull. The only reason I don't give this book a '10' is because it isn't for everyone. Most fans are interested in the story behind the game, but some aren't.

Stauth also writes like a sports reporter, not a novelist. He details everything that goes on behind the scenes that fans never see. The many phone calls and callbacks that may or may not lead to a trade for a draft pick or a supporting player. The panicked decisions to find players to fill out the bench when a star goes down. He really does on excellent job of presenting the coach's and the GM's perspective: that NBA basketball isn't just about the superstars, it's about getting fans in the seats, giving them a good time, and using the money to put a COMPLETE and COOPERATIVE team on the court.

Best book I own

I cannot express strongly enough how every NBA fan and especially every Pistons fan NEEDS to own this book. Even the mighty Bill "The Sports Guy" Simmons calls this a must-read in his own basketball opus, The Book Of Basketball. If you were interested in it enough to go so far as to read reviews on this book, BUY IT NOW. Trust me.

A gifted examination of the business of modern fitness - accessible and incisive story-telling

Recently on a leisurely 10k, I spotted a runner in grey, baggy sweatpants, reminding me of the sports gear of my youth. I was reflecting on the contrast between this man and my Lycra-clad friends who gather several times weekly for group runs, bike rides, and triathlon training. It seems like many of my on- and offline conversations with friends over the week were about races and training, where in my youth, one exercised in gym class. Now, it's a lifestyle.
The next day, I started reading Sweat Equity. I could not put Jason Kelly's book down. He uncovers the evolution of the fitness industry with a behind-the-scenes look at the "money" men and women who are in part propelling the business of personal fitness - its locations, events and accessories. Kelly is a gifted storyteller who links the personal passions of his interview subjects with a new "third place" where fitness and leisure dwell and thrive. He makes the sometimes perplexing business of private equity understandable for the lay person - without condescending or compromising the substance.
Whether you're a Color Runner, Ironman or Tough Mudder, you'll enjoy this well-executed examination of the business of fitness.

Terrific and insightful read. I've never finished a book so quickly!

I'm embarrassed to say, but I rarely get through an entire book. However, I read this entire book in 2 days! As an athlete who has tried many of the workouts/trends mentioned in this book, I found the background and insights fascinating. I am not a business person, but also found myself engaged by that aspect of the book. I highly recommend this book to athletes and non-athletes alike. It quickly engages you and the keen insights keep you interested throughout. A great book that could not have come out at a better time, given society's current focus on the many competing fitness trends. I look forward to seeing what subject Jason Kelly tackles next!

One of the very best texts currently on the market

Hassan Khalil's book (already in its second edition) has become a best-seller. Easy to understand why.
At the same time, the text manages to be very readable and fairly sophisticated. In fact, it is not very usual for Engineering texts to display such an advanced level of mathematical rigor. As a result, however, it is not entirely true that the book can be easily followed by undergrads. A reasonable degree of familiarity with -- or, rather, dexterity in -- the basics of Mathematical Analysis (with some topological underpinnings) is required. But, since the book is filled with theorems and rigorous proofs galore, grad students and research engineers with a strong penchant for Math are bound to welcome it as a bona fide blessing!
Unfortunately, it must be said that the book fails to make the 5-star rating for two reasons. First off, it is perhaps a bit too Electrical-Engineering-geared, nearly ignoring examples from other fields. Secondly, its treatment of time-varying systems is rather scanty, at best, basically relying on what can be ultimately traced to the intelectually dissatisfying time-freezing approach. (This is probably justifiable, since it would otherwise imply an additional 40-50 pages to make room for operator theory and Hilbert spaces, as is done, e.g., in the book by Feintuch & Saeks.)
Nevertheless, Prof. Hassan's is by far one of the best texts currently on the market.

An excellent textbook

This is an excellent textbook, outdoing, AS SUCH, the books by Vidyasagar, Isidori, and Rugh, as well as both of Minorsky's related classics. It is well written, well balanced, making extensive use of a fairly sophisticated language (not too abstract but certainly far from archaic), and features a plethora of exercises of various difficulty levels. Appendix A, presenting detailed, careful proofs of 21 theorems and lemmas is a definite "must." This appendix alone is worth the (sour) price of the book, making it today's "text of choice" when it comes to teaching courses. (Students should be familiar with ALL of them!)
The topics dealt with, while, for the most part, pretty standard, are appropriate for a first graduate course on nonlinear systems, as approached from the Control Engineering viewpoint. There's a bit of just about everything that's important in present-day studies of such systems: mathematical foundations, stability analysis, periodic solutions, averaging & pertubations (both regular and singular), feedback control & linearization, and Lyapunov-based design, including adaptive control. Even H-infinity is touched in passing!
Unfortuantely, the famous conjectures by Aizerman and Kalman and Letov's contributions do not constitute a central interest in the book. Lur'e's problem, on the other hand, IS mentioned.
The author provides a 195-title reference list and an effort to include recent texts is apparent. However, a few serious omissions do occur. For instance, Russian publications are nearly non-existing on said list, and Desoer's famous 1969 paper on the stability of slowly-varying systems is not mentioned explicitly. But it is not entirely accurate to say that Khalil's treatment of time-varying systems is centered around time-freezing techniques. He does, indeed, present one or two examples to that effect. But out of 734 pages, no less than 16 are dedicated to several aspects relating to stability of time-varying systems, most of which can be directly mapped back to Desoer's theorem.
By and large, this book is -- and shall remain for some time to come -- the best text for introductory graduate courses in Nonlinear Systems.

Being a Ph.D. canidate in Control Theory at Georgia Tech, I am familiar with the essential tools needed to be sucessful in advanced control engineering. This book covers the entire spectrum of topics in control theory presented at many universities around the country. It is presented with a strong mathematical foundation and has many illustrative examples. Subjects covered include the fundamental properties of differential equations, basic and advanced stability theory, feedback control and the feedback linearization/computed torque method which is a very popular approach to nonlinear design. It also contains introductions to newer techniques such as adaptive and sliding mode control. In my studies at GT, i have more than once been plesently suprised to find tools in this book that i didnt expect to find there. For example, chapters 5-9 cover the improtant results that i was exposed to in a 3 course graduate level sequence in ODE's from the math department!!
This book is sugessted for any serious student of control theory and it is recommended that the reader be exposed to at least one introductory real analysis course.

This book was well written and extremely painful to read

This book was well written and extremely painful to read. Although I know how dispickably humans can treat one another it was still extremely hard to read how a grown woman could treat a child. Although this happened in England it happens all around the world. I know that child protection servives is chronically ubderfunded here in the U.S., (children don't vote), and the abuse of children is rampant. It looks like England has the same problems.

Victoria Spry wrote this book about such an EVIL foster care giver Eunice Spry. She adopted Victoria. I've read so many books on child abuse and this is the worst by far. ( Also about Eunice Spry is a book called Child C ) I highly recommend both books.
How wonderful that both authors survived all the abuse they had to endure at the hands of this she devil herself Eunice Spry

Solid Sourcebook on Medieval University Themes

Comprising a series of edited manuscripts written by a wide variety of authorities under the guidance of an European editorial board, this volume lives up to expectations as a comprehensive survey of the medieval university. Topics the volume covers include student demographics, student life at the university, university legal incorporation into a recognized institution, educational techniques, guild policies, and many others. Though the text is not written as a popular history, it nevertheless is presented in an accessible manner, and most anyone interested in the topic will find a great deal of useful information concerning the rise of the medieval institution referred to as the "university." Although today's typical university may have substantially migrated from the original aims and goals of the 12th-century University of Paris, Oxford University, or the University of Bologna, it is quite illuminating to see how so much of the original design of the medieval European university has indeed come down intact to us in the 21st century. Further, the differentiation between northern universities (such as the University of Paris, Oxford University, and Cambridge University) and southern universities (the University of Bologna is an archetypical example) is clearly depicted in the work, providing a clear description of the variegation the institution has always possessed over the centuries, not just in today's context. Serving therefore primarily as a reference work, the wealth of knowledge contained in the text makes swallowing the $60 price tag for a paperback more palatable. In this regard, I view the multi-author, edited-version approach of the text as a definite plus: at our disposal is a series of well-written works by a variety of knowledgeable authors who all share the interest in keeping this information alive and available for scholarly research. I look forward to acquiring the entire multi-volume set at some time in the future.

As a short aside, but nonetheless directly related to the subject at hand, I have often made note to myself of the complete lack of background knowledge many students have concerning the historical background of their own university-based institutions. Although it would be perhaps indefensible to argue that knowledge of the historical development of the medieval European university is a necessary prerequisite for becoming a successful graduate, it IS arguable that - particularly for those majoring in Education as a field of study - knowing this material can be illuminating in understanding issues in today's university-based context. If nothing else than presenting a description of medieval pedagogical approaches, this history can inform us of how the university as an educational system can enrich us, and how that many of the devices and techniques now in use and championed as "the latest thing" often have direct correlates from half a millennia ago. Further, issues concerning the unionization of students and of teachers, as well as the attempts at universities to manage both, can be enlightened from the hundreds of years Europe has already had to attempt such practices. This text can help bring to the forefront of our thinking issues just such as these, and is surprisingly interesting as it does so.
