For the Disney music fans

This book contains 240 Disney from various forms of entertainment, including: 1) animated features/featurettes, 2) live action, 3) television, 4) Disney theme parks, & 5) theatrical production. It is likely that this edition was published before "Tangled" & "Frozen", since no songs from those movies are included in this book. There is one index by song title & another by show title. Most, if not all, of the songs seem to be written in the original key. Although there are a lot of songs, a lot of them are classics from older shows; therefore, the millenial generation may not appreciate some of these songs. My only disappointment is that there are only 2 songs from The Hunchback of Notre Dame & only 3 songs from Pocahontas. Over all, it's a good investment for the Disney music fans.

As far as fake books go, this is great because most, if not all, songs are in their original keys. Many fake books put things into "easy" keys, this seems to stay true to the keys and rhythms of the original songs.

This is a great purchase, I love to arrange the songs for my students and myself to play for fun. My students enjoy the songs because they know them, and they also get to learn many chords such as augmented and diminished chords as well as key changes all under the guise of fun Disney songs! The students can also play melodies that they are familiar with and the songs have been meet with success so far.

Excellent Guide

I was given this book by a priest at Saint Nektarios in Seattle after having lived in the Holy Land for six months. I would have much prefered to have had this book prior to my stay.

The book provides the way around the Holy Land touching on sites that will be of interest and spiritual benefit to the Orthodox Christian. Crisp black and white photos accompany each chapter on a site as well as a rather lengthy exposition (lengthy for a guide book) on the history of the site as well as interesting facts. For example, did you know that the entrance to the door of the Church of the Nativity in Bethelehm has a shorted door in order to prevent foreign armies from keeping their animals in large buildings and to protect in case of a seige? I had asked many guides I came across the reason for the door being short, and none of them could give me a satisfactory answer.

I highly recommend the book.

Typical Pandolfini

Well, lucky us! Finally, there's a COMPLETE guide to the game of chess, "from history to strategy"! One might think that, perhaps, Murray's History of Chess, or the MCO, or Euwe's books on chess strategy, or Fine's basic endgames book, might be a bit more complete on their respective subjects. Apparently we were wrong. It is this 120-or-so page tome which is the MOST comperhensive guide to all those fields. It says so right on the cover, so it must be true!

In reality, of course, this book is anything but "complete". As most of Pandolfini's books, it is nothing but rehashed trivialities for beginners. Three chapters deal almost with nothing but the rules of the game. Once this is done, a couple of more chapters (about 40 pages or so) deal with some very basic tactics and strategy (on the "make sure your pieces are defended" and "rooks belong behind passed pawns" level). Add a chapter of a smatterings of history, and the book is done.

If you aren't an absolute beginner, there would be nothing new for you in this "complete" book, and no reason to but it.

But even if you are, there are MUCH better books out there. Try Purdy's books for beginners, or Capablanca's "Chess Fundamentals". While far older, those books have quite a few advantages: they were written by FAR better players who put FAR more effort into their books, and are available for less than Pandolfini's tomes are.

Let's get one thing straight:

This is not a book on how to improve your chess. It is not a book on opening theory or a synopsis on endgame technique. It's a sound, comprehensive work from one of the best known, most respected chess instructors in America. Bruce Pandolfini answers the questions that chess students have asked, or are likely to ask, and he answers them in a complete but concise manner. There are around 540 questions in this book: Dig deep and I'm sure you'll find one that you would likely ask.
A solid reference work that will hold a special place in one's chess library. I just hope Mr. Pandolfini revises the book, if only to update on whatever happened to Bobby Fischer.

I'm not a fan of Pandolfini's book by any means, But this is one of his books I really liked.

An overlooked project by an overlooked architect

I am so glad that a book was finally written focusing on the 700+ Amsterdam playgrounds of Aldo Van Eyck - an extreemly signifigant and important group of urban small-scale architectural projects that have been, up until this point, largely unrecognized and overlooked for their signifigance and influence. (you all have probably climbed on an Aldo ven Eyck designed junglegym at some point in your lives) The book was written in accordance with an exhibit at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, a museum important to Aldo's theoretical development. It offers a thurough overview of the playgrounds in thier physical, historical, cultural, political, and archtiectural contexts. And...one of the bonus features of this book: there is an impressive collection of before and after photographs of some of the sites around the city. It is impressive that a simple and understated design using simple archtiectural elements such as this, when inserted into a vacant and overlooked lot in an urban context, can completely transform the area into a vibrant center of activity.

Completes the 109 story in Kagero's Monographs series...

This is a typical book in Kagero's Monographs series, of which it is number 44 (catalog number 3044). It is an 8-1'4" x 11-3/4" card cover with 104 pages. It has a 76 page main text supplemented by numerous black and white photos, 24 pages of high quality line drawings primarily in 1/48th scale (some subjects get the full six view treatment), and 4 pages of equally high quality color profiles (two per page) plus two more on the rear cover. The profiles and the front cover painting are the only color in the book.

Kagero covered the 109 in 8 books, curiously in reverse chronological order, 3 G/K series books, 2 F series books, 2 E series books, and the present book. No other aircraft in this series needed more than 4 books. No series covering the aircraft of World War II can leave the Bf 109 out; the trouble is finding something original to present. The present book has a somewhat easier time of this as the early models are not covered nearly as well as the famous WWII models.

The text has a brief development history of the 109 including much biographical information about Willy Messerchmitt. Next there is an extensive section describing the aircraft's service in the Spanish Civil War. Disappointingly, the section describing the service of the early model in the opening months of WWII are brief because they have already been covered in Kagero's Air Battles series. There is also some coverage of service in other air services and notes on painting schemes. The text is liberal in the use of pilots reminiscences.

Problems are fairly minor. The translation, while not horrible, has more than a few grammatical and syntactic quirks. There is a drawing of the V17A prototype with arrestor hook but no mention of it in the text.

Recommended for 109 completists and fans of the Monographs series. The modeller is well served but there are better references for the general enthusiast.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 A-D

I just bought this book and thought that by now most of the myths about these aircraft should have been cleared up. But with this book I find that I am wrong. Instead of helping to clarify information regarding the V Models, the author has added more confusion, especially in regards to those sent to Spain for the Legion Condor. In my opinion it is definitely not worth the price.
