Hugh Macmillan is a research associate at the African Studies Centre at Oxford University. He has taught at universities in Swaziland, Zambia, and South Africa and is the author of An African Trading Empire and Zion in Africa.

The Lusaka Years: the ANC in exile in Zambia, 1963 to 1994

If you want an ubiased history of the ANC during the party's exile years, this is probably the best book there at the moment. It has no axes to grind, and is also not a hagiography either.
First chapter is extremely good in the literature sense, but after that the book is written more like an academic paper, meaning it is impressive with fact finding but tends to be a dry read.
I recommend it especially for those who want to know unaffected facts about this period of the South African history. It is not only limited to the Zambia experience but Tanzanian also.
