A must read for all correctional nurses

Correctional nurses new and seasoned will benefit by this manifesto and the seven affirmations listed. It’s so easy to become jaded and tempting to work outside your scope of practice when you don’t remember daily why you entered the nursing field, and why specifically you selected this practice specialty.

This Manifesto Brings Heart and Caring to Correctional Nursng

Years of discussions with correctional nursing professionals resulted in this Manifesto. Since correctional nursing is a fairly new profession, emerging in the late 1970's, it is evolving with standards, body of knowledge and parameters for a safe and effective practice of taking care of incarcerated individuals. In order for nurses to practice in this sometimes described as a "harsh environment", certain ethical principles and collegiality facilitates a satisfying practice. Lorry has captured the seven affirmations or propositions most necessary for effective nursing. These affirmations are brought home with case examples, questions to ponder and quotes from those in practice. The Nursing Manifesto is bringing Caring and Heart into nursing and thus enables us to have a fulfilling career and bring health to others.

This is long overdue! This should be mandatory for all nurses hired to work in Correctional Healthcare. They should be given a copy and have a discussion on this during orientation. As nurse managers/administrators, we need to be the example for our nursing staff and live by this manifesto. Nurses need to hold each other accountable and should be encouraged to have open and honest discussion with their peers and managers when they see deviation from the propositions.
I will ensure that this is available to our nursing staff and do my best to practice in keeping with this manifesto. Thank you Lorry for putting into writing that which is the essence of a correctional nurse!!!
