The Car in 2035: Mobility Planning for the near FutureFrom Rubinyi, Kati (EDT)

The Car in 2035: Mobility Planning for the Near Future focuses on the car, the street, and public policy in Southern California. In this collection of essays and images, the car is viewed as both a challenge and benefit to our neighborhoods, cities, and suburbs. Despite rising fuel prices, the automobile will be Southern California's primary form of transportation in 2035 because the region's population will continue to be dispersed widely, and the car offers the best access to the area's tremendous diversity of economic, social, recreational, and cultural opportunities. But the infrastructure will need to accommodate a heterogeneous mix of modes of transportation, including more cars on the road than today.

Review
"This interesting, varied, and thought-provoking book focuses on transportation in southern California. With 27 contributors to the volume, it is clear that readers will experience more than one point of view and writing style.... The quality of this heavy paperback is impressive, and the use of color photographs, graphics, and charts is outstanding; kudos to the publisher." (C. J. Myers Choice, American Library Association)

THE CAR IN 2035 is a good title and I was anxious to learn about a future in which the car s role as a shaping force in American life is diminished. But this book, edited by Kati Rubinyi and published by the Civic Projects Foundation, Los Angeles, is not going to take the reader down the road to a post-carbon world. Rather it is a practical and multifaceted view of the future of mobility, grounded in the precepts of Southern California. --Chip Lord, Architect's Newspaper

The approach the authors of The Car in 2035, Mobility Planning for the Near Future propose: pragmatically retaining and enhancing the best of existing infrastructure while concurrently integrating and utilizing developing technologies in order to provide better mobility for the entire populace. Each chapter of The Car in 2035 is written by an expert in the subject being discussed. Those contributors are from a variety of disciplines and perform a variety of functions ranging from professional transportation planners to analysts, educators, architects, designers, and engineers. The book is divided into three main sections. One focuses mainly on the mode of transportation, as in The Car. The next concentrates on the area where travel or commuting takes place, The Street. And the last one takes a look at governance and Policy. Despite being based in scholarship and dealing with a serious topic, the writing is neither dull nor stuffy. Refreshing too is that many of the major points advocated are presented as point and counterpoint so the reader may consider the pros and cons. One premise needing no point/counterpoint is reasserted numerous times by multiple contributors. It will resonate with and be especially appreciated by Society of Automotive Historians members: the past must inform the present and the future. --Helen V Hutchings, SAH Journal May / June 2013

Insightful in many respects & equally engaging
By Guy
I've been in the business of scenario planning and innovation for nearly 14 years now, focused exclusively on changes in vehicle tech and use since 2008. I cannot think of another book as rich in diverse insights & opinions about one of the central pillars in any great society going all the way back to ancient Rome, Maya and Egypt. Most insightful is that the Editor's choice of essentially crowd-sourcing the book is so reflective of our times.

We tend to take moving from point A to point B for granted. But stop and consider the impact from the mass adoption of this revolutionary new tech- the car in the 1920's. Well, here we go again- so grab your seatbelt, strap in and get a peak into one of the most significant societal transformations already in progress. From architect, to the car buff, to owner's of repair shops, insurance execs, bankers, physicians, to countless other industries and professions impacted by how we move- you'll enjoy this ride!

A new take on "car culture"
By Sam
A very contemporary take on transportation design (an area often left to engineers). Nice use of photography. If you are looking for a book on car design, this is not the book for you. Unless you want to think about the car and transportation as a broader cultural phenomenon.

I worked in automotive industry and am very interested in this topic given recent development in autonomous car. I have to say it does offer some value but overall it is not organized - I am not complaining that this book does not even carry page number. It feels more like bits and pieces written by a group of different people at will but they are not connected and hardly come to the same major message. Some chapters are a little distracting without editing and polishing.
