Exciting end to a well-written series.
By M on Amazon
It is difficult to say very much without giving too much away. It is best to avoid reviews before reading a book. Instead rely on the author's reputation and a book's star rating when choosing a book. Then once you have read the book read the details of reviews.

That said, this has been an exciting and well-written series. Generally, I am not particularly fond of a post-apocalyptic theme as it is depressing and seems to hit too close to home these days. However, from the beginning this series provided a worthy protagonist to embrace and through which we navigate the treacherous new conditions. I have no military experience however the author seems to have adequate knowledge to present military information that feels authentic. This element has provided gratifying substance to this story. Of special note is how this author successfully writes from different points of view. We experience this world through survivors, heroes, villains, adults, children, and victims.

I didn't know this would be the last book in the series and it wasn't until the very end that I understood. I think this story could have gone on indefinitely. Yet having finished the book I feel an end is due. In this finale we were treated to Captain Harden coming back in full force. This is one of the most exciting books in the series. There are many well-written sequences bringing resolution and closure. Several characters undergo profound realizations and personal triumphs. The author doesn't attempt to provide every answer or tie up every loose end. We know the fight carries on but the tide has been turned and we can see they have a realistic chance to survive and build a Reunited States. I am satisfied with this ending but I will miss reading of Lee Harden, a great protagonist. In a similar vein, I would not take away points because I enjoyed a performance so much I wished it had not ended or because a song I had hoped to hear was not played.

NOTE: I am grateful that the author did not write this final book for those who have not read the previous books in the series. This book provides just enough refresher information to remind us of where the most recent book in the series left off. This is a very wise choice IMO as it is always detrimental to the pace of a book when all of the background is reiterated for newcomers. Hopefully people will be able to gather just how good this series is and be patient enough to begin reading it at the beginning.

Gloom without the doom
By R. Hunt
The final novel of The Remaining series is perhaps the least compelling. It's more of a tying-up-of-loose-ends story rather than a dramatic human- triumph finish. Having said that, there is no way fans of the series like myself can skip it. It's the finale after all. A bit long-winded on fight scenes, the finale doesn't give readers the complex insight into, and the subtleties and politics of the post apocalypse that the first few novels in the series delivered. I am never as interested in the zombie battles as I am in how people respond to the constant threat and how they try to rebuild life. Most disappointing of all, in my opinion, is Molles' rejection of love as a human value and path to a better life after the apocalypse. Spoiler alert: No one ends up embracing anyone in this finale. It's not gloom and doom. Just gloom.

Farewell, Captain Harden and thanks for the adventure!
By D. R. Green
Is this really farewell to Captain Lee Harden?? I have enjoyed the whole series and hate to say good-bye. One of the greatest thing about these books is the fast pace of the story. When I start reading I just have to keep going along with the relentless pace of the story. No conclusion to a series will please everyone, but It felt fitting to me. I would love to see another novel (or two) about how the United States might come back together after this. Would Briggs ever give up his control and rejoin the southeastern group??? Will some type of communication between the factions be developed?? Maybe D J Molles will give us more. I would look forward to it, but thanks for the great story and the character of Captain Harden!
